Week of March 4th
State Finals

In most states the State Finals will be this Saturday, and we wish good luck to those fortunate and good enough to make it this year! Making State Finals is an amazing accomplishment for you, your players, and your school. I know the dedication and hard work that goes into such a feat.

Here are important insights for players that will help take the pressure off during State Finals:

  1. Ask what I can do to help my teammates, which is #1 in importance; doing so will help to allay concerns about how you're doing.
  2. Be an actor, not a reactor, on defense. Always help and recover.
  3. On offense, when you catch the ball, face the basket every time for 2 seconds, and only then make your next decision.
  4. Also on offense, always ball fake — doing so will make it easier to pass.

IF THE OTHER TEAM STALLS:

  1. Front the cutter
  2. Deny your man the ball
  3. Front the post if they pick up the ball. Front and deny all players the ball.
  4. Force and keep the ball on the sideline. Work hard to keep the rock out of the middle.

LAST SHOT:

When going for a last shot of the half, game, or overtime, know WHEN you want the shot to be taken. Practice this and avoid an offensive foul, especially on the screener. Give the shot enough time to allow your team to score on a second tip — SO HIT THE BOARD. Have one guard back for defensive balance to counteract the opposing team's releasing a man with the shot. And remember: “It is better to be prepared and fail, than fail to prepare.”
